Career Transition
My passion for helping senior executives to manage their careers comes from having seen my own father’s unsuccessful struggle to regain his career after being made redundant in his 50s. Despite his outstanding track record and 27 years of loyal service with one of the world’s leading consumer goods companies, my father never had another proper full-time job past the age of 51. That’s why I care and why I do everything I can to help senior executives to manage their careers.
When my father lost his job in the early 1980s there was no internet or LinkedIn and nothing like the executive search industry that exists today. Today there are so many tools and resources that we can use to help us manage our careers, and yet many executives struggle to work out how to use these tools and resources effectively. My job is to help executives understand how to navigate the path to their next executive role.
Key Questions
In dealing with career transition there are a number of questions to be addressed. These are some of the questions that I work on with my coaching clients:
- Given my skills, experience and interests, what kind of role should I be going for?
- How do I make myself visible to the relevant people in the executive search industry?
- How should I structure my job search?
- How do I start networking effectively to support my job search?
The Career Story
In my experience a successful job search is built on the foundation of a clear, consistent and compelling career story. The career story is a personal narrative that helps you to build engagement with your network, to focus on your key skills and achievements, and to transform a nervous job interview into a productive meeting of minds. Regardless of your nationality, your industry or your function, a well-balanced career story gives you the confidence you need to manage a successful job search.
